Hi Alicia, thanks for taking the time to speak with us! To start, can you tell us a little bit about what you do at Cherry Godfrey?

I am Cherry Godfrey’s Accounts Administrator, which involves a variety of tasks. I do the pay away, credit cards and direct debits, Insurance premium fundings and insurance accounting spreadsheets. In addition, I do investor/insurance/finance filing and cover reception when needed!

What was your first job, and what did you learn from it?

My first job was at Comprop & Jones & Partners - I was 15 when I started. I began as an office junior, and during my time in this role I learned basic office tasks such as filing, scanning, letters and customer service skills. I was then promoted to Reception; for this position, I did secretarial and admin work. I had a great team and they helped me gain a good sense of humour. I also learnt how to make a great cup of coffee!

What values/skills have been the most important to you, both personally and professionally?

I believe that having a sense of humour is key in the workplace (and in your personal life). In general, laughing is vital when it comes to maintaining a positive and happy environment.

What do you love about Cherry Godfrey?

Cherry Godfrey is a local and family business, and it’s far from a typical corporate environment - I genuinely love that. There’s a strong sense of friendship in this company and helping each other out when needed. David Cherry is a very caring CEO: he truly appreciates his employees and the work we do. This was particularly evident during the COVID peak, when David would go out of his way to send flowers and cards to people going through difficult times (as well as other small tokens of appreciation).

I’m glad to be working for a company with a strong sense of compassion.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

I love playing badminton in my free time - I play at the Rohais Badminton Hall. I have a great time socialising and playing with everyone at the club. I have previously played against Wales in Ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles. It’s great because there’s a variety of age groups and people there, which always makes it a pleasure to go down and play; it’s a lovely community and we do lots of social events together. I’m currently training for the pathway to county/ Island Games - which will be hosted in Guernsey this year - which I am looking forward to. I had also taken an interest in 8 ball pool in previous years (I played for the Channel Islands team and competed in Malta and Wales for the European championships). As well as bonding over team games, I love trying new things like Bachata dancing and socialising outside of work.

And now, to finish, a series of ‘what is…’ questions! So, Alicia: what is…

…your favourite book?

I love reading in my spare time. I read so many books I can’t choose a favourite, so - instead - here are my top five authors: Sarah J. Maas, Tamora Pierce, Robyn Wideman, Maria V. Snyder, and Trudi Canavan. I am currently reading Hunters Shadows (whilst waiting for the next Robyn Wideman book to come out!).

…the best advice you’ve ever heard?

Stay true to yourself.

…something that recently made you smile?

A lot of things make me smile! One of my recent favourites was buying a ‘Dorothy’ costume for my great niece - an outfit for her to wear to an upcoming charity tea party held by Autism Guernsey.
